About Us

The Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary....WHO WE ARE

In 1942 a doctor's wife (and Trustee of the Cape Cod Hospital) officially organized the Cape Cod Hospital Aid Society with eighteen local women.  After WW II the group was divided into Town or Village Branches.

They provided pastries and manned the Coffee Shop, sewed articles, and made gifts.   They started a gift shop on a tray, then on a cart and then in a room.  In 1956 the Thrift Shop was opened in a small shop at the west end of Main Street in Hyannis, and subsequently moved to its present location across the street, in 1974.

Each Branch raised funds separately from the Hospital Administration's annual list of "urgently needed items and special equipment".  In 1959 the Branches began the current method of pledging specific annual funds to the hospital.  That first year, they made a three year pledge to raise $25,000.

In 1992, in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary, and to avoid any confusion with AIDS, the name of the Cape Cod Hospital Aid Society was changed to the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary.

Members primarily raise funds ( over $8 million thus far), and act as liaisons with their communities.  They also volunteer in the Cape Cod Healthcare medical facilities, work in the Thrift Shop, donate items to that shop, and make pillows, puppets and hats for patients at Cape Cod Hospital.  Each branch holds monthly meetings with diverse and interesting speakers.  All meetings are open to the public.  The Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary currently has over 300 members working in the Barnstable Branch, the Chatham-Harwich Branch, the Orleans Branch, and the Thrift Shop.  Our current $650 thousand dollar five year pledge will fund the new diagnostic suite and X-ray and CT scan rooms in the Lorusso Emergency Center expansion and renovation project at Cape Cod Hospital.

The Orleans Branch was organized in 1968 by 25 women.  In less than a year the membership grew to 189.  The members had successfully held a bridge luncheon, a food festival, a fashion show, and a Holiday Bazaar.  They went on to sponsor theatrical performances, raffles, Christmas and spring house tours, luncheon fashion shows and card parties, and created a cook book.  The membership was primarily from Orleans, and expanded to include Brewster, and Eastham.

The Holly Berry Bazaar, held every two years, is known throughout New England...a not to be missed Cape Cod Event.  Bake sales, games days, raffles, and auctions all contribute to our fundraising efforts.

The Orleans Branch meets the first Tuesday of the month, September through May, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, at Monument Road and Route 28 in Orleans .  Members gather at 9:30 AM for refreshments and socializing.  The meetings start at 10:00,  and the programs run from 11:00 AM to noon.  A luncheon is held in June.  The public is welcome at our meetings.
